What does hooks see as the mistakes of the early feminists and what role does the family have in promoting sexism, according to hooks?
Hooks explains that the early feminists were far too extreme for the goal they were trying to reach. Instead of gaining awareness of the issue at hand, they took it too far and created something irrational. The views of feminism was to stand up for the female oppression but with irrational thoughts and irrational ways of informing the public, it turned into an oversized headache. People did not care to listen to these women and by being so irrational they limited their scope on the amount of people they could gain in their fight against oppression. People zoned out after awhile and therefore this hindered the goal they were attempting to reach.
In the family is where hooks states that sexism dwells. Due to the past, where women were the care givers, it turned into the stereotype and assumption that that is there sole duty on Earth. This allowed no advancement in the career world because the belief that a woman’s place was in the home, in her kitchen, cooking barefoot and pregnant. Now, this has changed slightly but woman who try to be successful career women and also mothers are shunned by some outsiders who believe that they are sacrificing their child’s happiness and care for their own personal goals and ambitions. Things have come a long way since then but many issues still exist.
